About this tour
Not every trip below the bridge has to be about ghosts. This 90-minute tasting takes a maximum of eight guests into the atmospheric vaults of The Lost Close, off Parliament Square, for a guided flight of four whiskies — one from each of Scotland's major regions. A knowledgeable host walks you through how Scotch is made and how to nose and taste it, in a candlelit stone room that makes the whole thing feel like a secret. It is the underground for people who want atmosphere with a dram in hand.
What's included
- Four whiskies, one from each major Scottish region
- Exclusive access to The Lost Close underground vaults
- Experienced local guide
Not included
- Gratuities
- Additional tastings / souvenirs
What to expect
You are led down into the vaults and settled in a private tasting room. Over an hour and a half your host pours four whiskies, explaining the character of the Lowlands, Highlands, Speyside and Islay as you go, with plenty of room for questions. The small-group cap means it never feels rushed or crowded, and the vault setting gives it an intimacy the bigger tours can't match.
Good to know
This is an 18+ experience. Access is by a spiral staircase into the vaults, so it is not step-free. Come a little hungry — four drams land better with something to eat beforehand. Book ahead: with only eight places, dates sell out.
Where it meets and how to get there
The tasting meets at John's Coffee House & Tavern on Parliament Square, tucked behind St Giles' Cathedral — a few minutes' walk from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Waverley. Your confirmation has the exact door. More logistics are in the visiting guide.
Who it's for
Whisky lovers and curious beginners, couples and small groups after something memorable and adult, and anyone who likes the idea of the vaults but not the ghost-tour theatrics. If you'd still rather have the classic haunted experience, see the world-famous ghost tour or the vaults walking tour. Compare the full range on Edinburgh Underground Tours.
